Chapter 6

The warm, easy, comfortable living room Tony had grown to love in his dreams was now becoming somewhat of an irritation. Even when Chris was visiting his dreams it wasn't normally this frequently, but here he was yet again, standing in the living room, his back to the large bay window that showed the front yard.

No sooner had he gotten his bearings than he saw movement in front of him coming from around the corner where the family room and kitchen were. He clenched his fists, as well as his jaw when Chris appeared, and he saw those black eyes and blank expression.

She moved toward him and Tony braced himself. But all she did was move around and sit on the couch across from him. She was wearing a long sundress but was barefoot so when she sat, she curled her legs up next to her and folded her hands in her lap. It was a relatively benign gesture and yet it didn't look natural on Chris's body.

As soon as she’d sat, a dark shadow outline of a man came and sat next her on the couch. The male shadow was a little over six feet tall and on the thin side. Tony had a flash of the real Chris’s words. This shadow did look different from the one that appeared at the top of the stairs in previous dreams. That one was thicker, as if the being underneath had a more solid build. Maybe she was right, there were two different beings traipsing around in his head.

"Please, Anthony, have a seat," requested fake Chris, tilting her head slightly to the side.

Tony knew without a doubt the shadow was controlling fake Chris and that it was not his friend sitting before him. Not knowing who the individual was, he folded his arms and frowned.

"No thanks, with all due respect, I don't know you and you're not even willing to show me what you look like. Trusting you that I should sit down, which puts me closer, feels like a bad idea." He didn't try to control the bite in his voice and instead bore his gaze into the shadow but made sure he still was aware of what fake Chris was doing. The last thing he wanted was her to sneak up on him because his attention was divided.

"My apologies, I did not mean to make you angry. I thought talking through this particular form." Fake Chris motioned to herself. "Would put you more at ease, as I said yesterday. I did not mean for it to be upsetting. I know she is a friend of yours. As for the shadow form you see, I'm afraid that is the best I can do at this point in time. Magic being what it is and circumstances being what they are, I don't quite have the power to appear fully in your dreamscape. Since the image of your friend is already trapped in your mind somewhere it was easier to pluck that information and form something you could speak to.
